ARTIST STATEMENT:
This audio piece focuses on San Francisco's Mission District's 24th Street, or La 24. It is a narrated and abridged version of the poem "This is an Ode to La Veinticuatro (until it's not..." from Josiah Luis Alderete's "baby axolotls and old pochos" published by Black Freighter Press. It's an outtake from a larger project –– "The Mission Muralismo Audio Zine – Volume I" –– in which Olivia Peña and Alderete interweave their perspectives and writing with stories from the 1970s to today from artists who worked through the Mission Muralismo Movement.
